The Abolish ISA Movement or Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA expects more than 50,000 supporters to take to the streets of Kuala Lumpur this Saturday in a rally to mark the 49th anniversary of the dreaded law.

The movement, consisting of the cream of Malaysian civil society, hopes to send an unmistakable message to Prime Minister Najib Razak that the time has come to end the oppressive law used frequently by his Umno-BN government to detain political foes without trial for indefinite periods of time.

“Based on the feedback we have received, at least 50,000 people will attend,” GMI committee member Norlaila Othman was reported as saying.

But despite the GMI’s determination to stage the rally, Norlaila expressed concern that the authorities may still throw a last-minute spanner into the works.

Already, Omardin Mauju the head of the Association of Seni Silat Lincah Malaysia  – which is pro-ISA – has asked members not to take part.

Said PKR strategic affairs director Tian Chua: “This is bound to be used as yet another excuse for the police to clamp down on protesters.”

DUN Permatang Pasir – Another Anwar-Najib showdown in the making

DUN Permatang Pasir – Another Anwar-Najib showdown in the making

7ANOTHER battle royal is shaping up between the ruling coalition and the opposition following the death of in Penang state assemblyman for Permatang Pasir Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman, 60, this morning (31 July) from a heart attack.

The impending showdown couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time than this for Prime Minister Najib Razak and the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition. Najib’s headache stems from the fact that Permatang Pasir is the backyard of Anwar Ibrahim, leader of the opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

The BN has lost all five by-elections in the peninsula since last year’s general elections which saw the BN winning just by the skin of their teeth to hang on to power. But it lost its two-third parliamentary majority and five state governments in the process.

It only managed to win the by-election for the Batang Ai state seat in Sarawak, a traditional BN’s stronghold. Four of the six by-elections were due to death-in-office of the incumbents.

Najib had just completed his first 100 days as the sixth prime minister of Malaysia with a high 65 percent popularity rating as polled by Merdeka Centre, an independent pollster.

The BN also came close to bucking its losing trend when it nearly beat PAS, its arch rival, in their own backyard in Kelantan in the Manik Urai by-election earlier this month.

Naijb was euphoric over this and described the outcome of Manik Urai by-election in Kelantan as a moral victory for Barisan Nasional.

He said the greatly reduced margin showed that there was a major swing of votes towards the BN.

Najib said the defeat in Manik Urai could be seen as encouraging for BN, more so as number of spoilt votes, at 117, was higher than PAS’ majority of win of only 65 votes, down drastically from its big margin of 1,352 votes in the March 2008 general elections.

“There was a big swing factor in Manik Urai. This means we are regaining the people’s confidence and if we continue with our efforts, I believe the position of BN will become stronger,” Najib was quoted as saying.

However, BN’s fortunes took a tumble when Teoh Beng Hock, the political aide of a DAP lawmaker, died in suspicious circumstances two weeks ago while in the custody of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. Teoh was assisting in an investigation into alleged misappropriation of constituency funds by his boss, Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, who is also a Selangor state executive councilor.

Najib has promised a Royal Commission of Inquiry into MACC’s manner of interrogating Teoh as well as a coronial inquest into his death. But this has not pacified his family nor the public.

Under this circumstances, the Barisan is going to face an uphill task. The only way the battle royal is going to fizzle out is that the BN chooses not to contest in the forthcoming by-elections, thus giving a walkover to Anwar Ibrahim. Strange as it may sound, the BN did just that two months ago at the Penanti by-election for the Penang state seat.

Najib took a terrible tongue lashing from his self-anointed mentor and former premier, Dr Mahathir Mahamad, for backing out of the fight.

The Penanti seat fell vacant after Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin quit as assemblyman on April 16 after stepping down as Penang Deputy Chief Minister I on April 8.

In the absence of any challenge from the BN, Dr Mansor Othman, who is from Anwar’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat won hands down in the four-cornered fight.

The Penanti state seat is one of the three that comes under the parliamentary constituency of Permatang Pauh which is held by Anwar Ibrahim. The other two are Seberang Jaya and Permatang Pasir.

Anwar himself won the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat last August by securing 31,195 votes or a majority of 15,671 votes over the UMNO candidate, Arif Shah Omar Shah.

The Permatang Pasir seat is now vacant following the death of PAS State Assemblyman Mohd Hamdan Abd Rahman early this morning.

Mohd Hamdan, a two term state assemblyman and former Penang PAS commissioner, was 60. He left behind a wife and six children.

A Penang government spokesman said Mohd Hamdan’s body is expected to arrive in his constituency this afternoon and buried there.

In the general election in 2008, Mohd Hamdan polled 11,004 votes to beat UMNO candidate Ahmad Sahar Shuib by a majority 5,433 majority to win the seat. The constituency has 20,350 registered voters of which 72.93 percent are Malays, 25.87 percent Chinese and Indians 1.1 percent.

The late Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman was conferred a datukship just 20 days ago on the occasion of the Penang Governor’s birthday. Hamdan was Pas state commissioner for Penang for 11 years.

He received his early education in Alor Setar, Kedah. He was a language teacher at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College from 1965 to 1969 at the Maktab Sultan Abdul Hamid, Kedah from 1965 to 1966. (By BOB TEOH/MySinchew

At last, Pakatan Rakyat will be officially registered as a coalition – Zaid Ibrahim

At last, Pakatan Rakyat will be officially registered as a coalition – Zaid Ibrahim

6KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Pakatan Rakyat (PR) is working towards registering the alliance officially to underline its commitment towards being a viable alternative coalition to the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN), says Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.

The former BN minister, who joined PKR less than two months ago, wrote in his blog yesterday that he was aware of the criticisms levelled at PR parties for not formalising a common platform.

“All the members of Pakatan are ready to serve the public in the name of Pakatan.

“In fact in all our daily activities we are already acting as members of Pakatan and not just members of PKR, PAS or DAP,” he wrote.

Since joining the federal opposition, Zaid has been given the task of coordinating the activities of the joint PR secretariat.

The Malaysian Insider understands the act of formalising the alliance as an official coalition like BN has one major hurdle.

Under the rules of the Registrar of Societies, a political coalition must consist of at least seven parties. This means PR will have to attract more political parties to join its fold before it can be registered.

But Zaid appeared confident that this could be achieved.

“The people will be given a real choice in the next elections; there will be one-to-one contests,” he said.

PR leaders are understood to be in talks with several political parties to join the alliance.

But there are also ongoing talks between PKR, DAP and PAS to come out with common policies.

“I am aware of many critics who say Pakatan does not have concrete policies or even common policies. People say that because of our different ideologies Pakatan cannot be united like BN.”

He said PR leaders and members were already tired of being in opposition and have proven their abilities to withstand pressure from what he referred to as “dictatorial BN government.”

“They have been tested time and again. They have been jailed, detained under the ISA and their supporters are brave and strong.”

He claimed that BN’s strategy now was to create fissures among PR parties “because they are afraid of one-to-one contests.”

While Zaid acknowledged there were weaknesses in the PR alliance, he said the leaders remained committed towards formalising their current arrangement and offering a viable alternative to BN.

DUN Permatang Pasir – will BN give another ‘walkover’ to Pakatan Rakyat?

DUN Permatang Pasir – will BN give another ‘walkover’ to Pakatan Rakyat?

pakatanWill BN give another walkover to pakatan rakyat?  Maybe a lot of us will be wondering whether BN wants to face pakatan in another by election in this pakatan stronghold.

DUN Permatang Pasir is in the Permatang Pauh constituency.  Within 1 and half year, voting had been held for three times in this constituency and with Permatang Pasir coming on, it will be four.  Quite a co-incidence that these things happen!

In the last by-election in this constituency, at DUN Penanti, BN did not want to contest.  It did not nominate any candidate to contest the incumbent pakatan.  BN said it is a waste of money and time.  It did not want to indulge in Pakatan politics.  Everybody knew that BN did not want to contest is because they want to avoid another lose at a by-election.

But will BN give the same excuse and stay out of this by-election?  May be not.  After the Manek Urai by-election, we believe BN has got new confidence.  We will see if BN can maintain it’s new momentum in Penang.

Teoh Beng Hock’s death: Was he killed upstairs rather than downstairs? – RPK

by Raja Petra Kamarudin

Was Teoh Beng Hock killed upstairs and then his body placed downstairs to make it appear like he jumped out of the window? Look at the two pictures below and see the difference. Judging by the photo of Tan Kian Chong, it appears like Teoh did not really fall but his body was placed there after he died.

Student Tan Kian Chong was found dead at the bottom of Apartmen Vista Angkasa in Kampung Kerinchi yesterday, suspected of falling down 16 floors. See the ‘mess’. And eyewitnesses said they heard an ‘explosion’ when his body hit the ground while his blood was splattered right up to the second floor of the building.

Khir Toyo – Underworld gang behind Vice and Gambling in Selangor!

Khir Toyo – Underworld gang behind Vice and Gambling in Selangor!

5(Bernama) – An underworld movement is behind sand theft, vice and illegal gambling activities in Selangor, claims former mentri besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohammad Khir Toyo.

Khir further claimed it was this group that helped certain candidates win in the last general election so that it could continue with its activities unhindered.  He said, when he was mentri besar, only 700 licences were approved to operate gambling outlets, cyber cafes and spas but according to National Security Council statistics, Selangor was now estimated to have over 4,000 such outlets that were operating illegally.

“If we were to look at the front pages of newspapers today . . . it seems there is a link between politicians and the underworld . . . .,” said Khir in commenting on the front page headline in Utusan Malaysia reading “Kongsi gelap taja YB” (Underworld being sponsored by elected representatives).  Khir told this reporters after launching Yayasan Bakti Khidmat Masyarakat Malaysia’s charity smart card “U Pay”, here today.

He also alleged that illegal massage parlours were not only operating in urban areas but in the rurals as well.  “Not only in Puchong, but even in places like Sabak Bernam, Sungai Besar and Sekinchan. I am not sure if the people in Sungai Besar are always having body aches,” he said.

Khir also questioned why revenue from sand sales in Selangor only amounted to RM4 million when the government under his leadership had projected an annual turnover of RM200 million for the commodity.

He added that he was raising these issues to reprimand the current government so that it would rectify weaknesses and not because he was jealous.  He also said that the current government managed to attract RM4 billion in investments last year whereas when he was mentri besar, the state managed to bring in RM11.8 billion in investments.

Did Zahid Hamidi meet Netanyahu?

Did Zahid Hamidi meet Netanyahu?

4We Malaysians cannot visit Israel. It says so in our international passport. Reason being Kuala Lumpur do not have diplomatic ties with Tel Aviv. Malaysia has all the while condemned Israeli atrocities in West Asia in particular Palestine. As a Malaysian I stand Malaysia’s anti-Israel policy.

Whilst I fully support our country’s tough stand, I also believe in engaging the Israelis in dialogues. If not for anything else then it’s to tell them off right in the face instead of hitting at them with speeches in forums, via media conferences, statements etc. So when I read a Bernama report recently that Defence Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had met Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, I was excited, to say the least.

The Bernama report, datelined Lebanon, said Zahid met Netanyahu during the recent Paris Air Show to tell the Israel PM, in no uncertain terms, Malaysia’s stand on the West Asia issue. This is good stuff, I told myself.

And the report quoted Zahid as saying the meeting was at the request of Netanyahu himself. Boy, this is even better, I screamed. I mean there’s this Israeli top leader who is so used to rub shoulders with US Presidents and other world leaders, seeking to meet our very own Defence Minister. I’m proud to be Malaysian.

And the story got greater. According to Bernama, Zahid said he laid out conditions before agreeing to entertain Netanyahu. “I put down conditions if he want to meet me. He should not bring along his officers, bodyguards, no photographers or camera crew and no double standards,” said Zahid as reported by Bernama. The Israel PM agreed and hence the meeting. Said Bernama, Zahid gave all that details to Malaysian journalists covering his trip to Lebanon.

But then, a few days after reading the report in the local newspapers, came a damper. Zahid’s special officer Abdul Halim Majid issued a statement which said Zahid never met Netanyahu the Israeli PM. I was not only shocked but devastated. If I had been floating, I came crashing down to earth like an old over-ripe cempedak.

Halim’s statement, carried by local newspapers on July 19, was short, brief and cold. The meeting between Zahid and Netanyahu never took place, it said. The statement went on to explain, Zahid had met Ehud Barak, the Israeli Defence Minister.

And said Halim’s statement, Zahid met Barak during cocktails function at the Paris Air show.

Now, of us can come up with all kinds of interpretations. We can ask many questions which needed to be answered by the Defence Minister, his officers, MINDEF whoever. And the list of questions can go on and on. But I do not want to go through the agony. Let Zahid worry about that. I am already blushing and although I am dark skinned, it’s showing. What happened lah? (By MOHSIN ABDULLAH/MySinchew))

Tema astro ialah ‘making your life richer’.

Teoh Beng Hock’s inquest – DNA of two males found on Teoh’s clothes!

Teoh Beng Hock’s inquest – DNA of two males found on Teoh’s clothes!

b1cbe1fce859a4ed223f16417cf1c1d4SHAH ALAM: DNA from two people were found on the clothes of Teoh Beng Hock — and one is from an unknown male, the inquest into his death was told.

The mystery individual has been labelled as Male 1.  Tan Hock Chuan, the lead counsel acting for the Attorney-General, said one of the DNA profiles derived from a swab taken from the back of the blazer worn by Teoh matched blood specimen taken from the deceased.  The other DNA profile belonged to an unknown male, he said.

Tan said another DNA profile from a swab taken from the belt worn by Teoh also consisted of a mixture of male DNA types – one matched Teoh’s blood stain specimen while the other was from an unknown male.

(The inquest was not told whether the DNA was there before or after Teoh’s death.)

Swabs were taken from 102 individuals to determine if any of their DNA matched the unknown person or persons.  “I’ve been told by the chemist that tests on 90 people have been completed and tests on 12 male individuals will be conducted,” he said, adding that two people had also refused to give samples.  This, he added, had delayed the process.

Lawyer Gobind Singh Deo, who is holding a watching brief for Teoh’s family, asked Tan: “We wish to know if any of those 90 specimens matched the DNA of Male 1?”  Tan replied that this was best revealed by the experts.  Coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas postponed the inquest to Aug 5 to give more time to the lawyers to study all the documents.

It is learnt that police are collecting swabs for DNA testing from all who came into contact with Teoh’s body at the scene or the mortuary.  Sources said among those expected to give samples were state Chief Police Officer Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar, the investigating officer and pathologists.

Outside the court, Gobind said it was good that the coroner postponed the inquest as it would give more time for those concerned to focus on the DNA angle and carry out the various tests.  “The results from the unidentified DNA profile will be very telling,” he added.

Gobind said his team would examine the post-mortem reports, chemist profiling, forensic findings, still photographs and closed-circuit TV camera footages with the help of foreign experts.  Also present were Teoh’s father, Leong Hwee, 62, brother Beng Kee, 33, sister Lee Lan, 29, and fiancee Soh Cher Wei.  DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan were also there.

Lee Lan said the family appreciated that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak met them but maintained their wish for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to unravel Teoh’s death instead of the inquest. – star online

Kematian Teoh Beng Hock: Polis digesa siasat dibawah seksyen 302 – PAS Selangor.

tbh2KUALA LUMPUR, 29 Julai (Hrkh) - PAS Selangor mendesak agar pihak polis segera menyiasat kes kematian Teoh Beng Hock di bawah Seksyen 302, kanun keseksaan.

– mks. – harakahdaily

Teoh Beng Hock’s inquest – Unknown DNA implicates Teoh was murdered?

b1cbe1fce859a4ed223f16417cf1c1d4Bernama today reported that DNA trace of an unidentified man was found on the back of the blazer and belt of political aide Teoh Beng Hock who fell to his death at the Plaza Masalam here on July 16.  This was told at the inquest into Teoh’s death on  Wednesday before it was adjourned to Aug 5.

Government-appointed lawyer Tan Hock Chuan, who is assisting the inquest conducted by coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas, told the court the “mystery man” had yet to be identified although samples of DNA were taken by the Chemistry Department from 102 individuals.

Who is this misterious man?  What has he to do with the death of Teoh Beng Hock.  If this is the case, then we cannot rule out that Teoh was actually being murdered.  The police who had finished their investigations  on Teoh’s death has not revealed whether there was any foul play or anybody being suspected.  Yesterday the Selangor polis chief wants the court to determine on that.

All these while a lot of BN aligned agencies and individuals claimed that Teoh probably fell off or jumped to his death.  These people opened their corrupted mouth too soon.  Until the authorities can proof without any doubt that the unknown DNA has nothing to do with Teoh’s death, we will have to consider that Teoh was murdered!

Now the police have to find out whom does the DNA belongs to.  Since new laws had been passed that DNA evidence  are inevitable proof, the culprit cannot escape.  The DNA bill which is believed being enacted especially for Anwar Ibrahim might get somebody else as it’s first victim.  Let’s wait and see.

Inquest on Teoh Beng Hock – unknown DNA found on Teoh’s blazer & belt!

hp_featured290709b SHAH ALAM: The DNA trace of an unidentified man was found on the back of the blazer and belt of political aide Teoh Beng Hock who fell to his death at the Plaza Masalam here on July 16, the inquest into Teoh’s death was told Wednesday before it was adjourned to Aug 5.

Government-appointed lawyer Tan Hock Chuan, who is assisting the inquest conducted by coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas, told the court the “mystery man” had yet to be identified although samples of DNA were taken by the Chemistry Department from 102 individuals.

Tan said that besides the DNA trace of the “mystery man”, Teoh’s DNA trace was also found on the blazer and belt.

“Samples were taken from 102 individuals to determine whether their DNA profile matched the unidentified DNA trace. The DNA profile reports of 90 of the individuals are ready while the remaining 12 have yet to be obtained.

“I was also informed by the investigating officer that two people had declined to have their DNA samples taken,” he said.

Teoh, 30, political aide to Selangor state executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16 on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam here after having given a statement as a witness to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over allegations of misuse of funds by Selangor state executive councillors. The MACC office is located on the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam.

On July 22, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that an inquest would be held to determine the cause of Teoh’s death.

He also said that a royal commission of inquiry would be set up to determine the standard operating procedure of questioning of witnesses and suspects by the MACC.

At the inquest Wednesday, lawyer Gobind Singh Deo, who is holding a watching brief for Teoh’s family, wanted to know whether the DNA profile of any of the 90 individuals matched the DNA trace of the unidentified man.

He said this was one more reason why the court should adjourn the hearing, pending the outcome of the whole process of DNA profiling. Tan said it would be better for the chemist himself to say whether any of the 90 DNA profiles matched the DNA trace. -Bernama

Teoh Beng Hock’s death – inquest postponed to Aug 5.

Teoh Beng Hock’s death – inquest postponed to Aug 5.

hp_featured290709bSHAH ALAM: The inquest into the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock at the Magistrates Court here has been postponed to Aug 5 at the request of lawyers representing the family and the Selangor Government.

Coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas granted the request after hearing arguments from Gobind Singh Deo who had said that the lawyers needed time to study all relevant documents, as well to grant the Malaysian Government time to consider the family’s request that a Royal Commission of Inquiry be established to investigate the death.

Azmil Muntapha had earlier granted lawyers appointed by the family and the Selangor Government “interested party” status, allowing them to question witnesses during the inquest, which was expected to last 15 days.

The Bar Council had also led a team to hold a watching brief and who requested “interested party” status.

Tan Hock Chuan, acting for the Attorney-General, said he had no objections regarding the first two groups but said the lawyers holding a watching brief for the Bar Council did not fall within the applicable provisions to be granted such a status.

The Bar Council lawyers, led by Hisyam Teh, told coroner Azmil Muntapha that there may be questions that they would want to ask the witnesses and assured him that all these questions would be relevant.

Coroner Azmil Muntapha, who is also the Shah Alam High Court deputy registrar, however disallowed their request.

Teoh, 30, was found dead on July 16 at Plaza Masalam the morning after he was interviewed for 10 hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which has its state office on the 14th floor of the building.

Teoh, who is the political secretary to Selangor exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah, was reported to be a witness in the investigation into the alleged abuse of constituency development funds by several Selangor Pakatan Rakyat state assemblymen.

Reports had said that Teoh was released after his statement was recorded, but had asked to sleep on the sofa at the office. His death was believed to have taken place between 6am and 8am on July 16.

The inquest is on despite many quarters questioning its effectiveness and calling for a Royal Commission of Inquiry instead to determine the cause of Teoh’s death.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the inquest to probe his death and a Royal Commission to look into the MACC’s investigation and questioning procedures with regard to Teoh.

Holding a watching brief for the family at the inquest are Gobind, Sankara Nair, Lim Lip Eng and Karpal Singh (who was not present in court Wednesday).

Acting for the Selangor Government are Malik Imtiaz Sarwar, Ashok Kandiah, Sreekanth Pillai and Asmah Yunos.

Acting for the Attorney-General are Tan, Mohd Idham Abd Ghani, Cains Tan and Justin Wee.

Earlier, Gobind said that Teoh’s family was particpating in the inquest under protest.

He asked for a postponement on the grounds that the family, at a meeting with Najib on Tuesday, had appealed to the Prime Minister to set up the Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate Teoh’s.

He said that the Cabinet will hold its weekly meeting later Wednesday, and if it decided to accede to the family’s request, the inquest would be redundant sinc eth Royal Commission would have a wider scope of powers to determine what had led to Teoh’s death.

He also said that the lawyers acting for the family and the Selangor Government had not been given the relevant documents which included the pathologists’ reports.

He said they would also need time to study the post-mortem DNA report, and asked why the Government is in “such a hurry.”

The Attorney-General’s team however argued that as this was an inquest and not a trial, it is not obliged to share these documents under the law.

However, Tan, who was leading the team, said the state was willing to furnish all documents, except witnesses’ statements.

A total of 90 witnesses are expected to be called to tesitify in the inquest, according to police records, at least 28 of them MACC officers. More than 60 witnesses were registered outside the witness waiting room at the Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.

Also subpoenaed is Teoh’s fiancee Soh Cher Wei, who confirmed that she was called to appear before the inquest.

Other key witnesses expected to be called are the three pathologists from University Malaya Medical Centre and Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital and three chemists who handled Teoh’s case.

Journalists had started gathering outside the courtroom at 7.30am on Wednesday, and by 8.20am, Teoh’s family arrived.

Among those attendinjg the inquest on Wednesday were DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan who has also been listed as a witness, state executive councillor Dr Xavier Jeyakumar and Bar Council president Ragunath Kesavan.

Lim had earlier asked why the Attorney-General’s team was being led by Tan, a criminal lawyer, and not a deputy public prosecutor. – star online

Public money splurged to boost image of Najib’s administration!

Public money splurged to boost image of Najib’s administration!

728_najibKUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — The Malaysian government is continuing a Barisan Nasional (BN) tradition of spending big bucks to get positive publicity for the administration overseas.

The Malaysian Insider understands, however, that some senior government officials are not pleased that the Najib administration is considering spending large amounts to buy good publicity.

A number of companies, including renowned international public affairs and media relations company Apco Worldwide, are pitching for a new round of government-related work believed to be worth some RM20 million.

The contract has not been signed yet but the administration is understood to be leaning towards giving Apco Worldwide a big pay day.

It is understood that the services of Apco Worldwide was brought in by Omar Mustapha, the close aide of the PM who was recently embroiled in controversy over his proposed apppointment onto the board of national oil company Petronas.

Typically the scope of work for companies like Apco Worldwide will involve getting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Malaysia onto slots on major news channels such as CNBC and CNN.

Bylined articles in foreign newspapers such as the one which Najib wrote for the Wall Street Journal when he took office are also targeted.

There will also be a lobbying element, especially in the United States which has traditionally been sympathetic to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Najib’s recent telephone conversation with President Barack Obama was a major coup for the foreign experts already working in the PM’s office.

It is understood that the Najib administration is also working hard to secure an official visit from the US president to Malaysia, as this would boost the PM’s international image and undermine Anwar’s influence in Washington.

Apco Worldwide is understood to have had an official based in Najib’s office since the early days of the administration.

Apco and other public relations specialists from the United States have also been helping Najib craft his 100 days strategy.

This includes his 1 Malaysia message and other key platforms of his administration.

While the results so far of the foreign public relations firms have been mixed, some senior government officials are understood to be unhappy with their further involvement, especially if it comes with an escalation in costs.

But supporters of these foreign public relations teams point out that they also work to neutralise the opposition’s impact outside Malaysia by reaching out to opinion makers in countries deemed important to Malaysia.

Najib is not the first prime minister, however, to have used expensive foreign help to boost his image and that of his administration.

Tun Abdullah Badawi also used a foreign-based public relations firm to help project a positive image of himself as a progressive Muslim leader, and Malaysia as a modern Muslim nation.

Perak crisis : 7th May sitting null and void – rights/privileges committee!

Perak crisis : 7th May sitting null and void – rights/privileges committee!

8a37e119a50db284812a088c2221df32IPOH, July 27 – After their verbal skirmish with the Barisan Nasional (BN) government authorities in the morning, Perak Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders finally convened its Rights and Privileges Committee meeting at the Syuen Hotel here this afternoon.

During the meeting, chaired by ousted Speaker V. Sivakumar, explanations from three witnesses were heard – Perak DAP chief Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham, constitutional expert Tommy Thomas and Pokok Assam assemblyman Yee Seu Kai.  The meeting was held to investigate Yee’s complaint on the events of the May 7 assembly sitting which saw the forced removal of Sivakumar as Speaker, the appointment of BN’s Datuk R. Ganesan to replace him and the latter’s act of summoning the police into the House.

In a press conference after the hearing, Sivakumar said that it was clear from evidence that the entire sitting had been illegal and should be considered “null and void”.  He said that according to the expert opinion of Thomas, no chairman of any association or body could be removed from his post by his members if the meeting was not officially opened yet.  “Similarly, the May 7 sitting had not yet begun but already the BN introduced the motion to remove me.  “And how could Ganesan be brought into the House as the new Speaker when all that time, I was still in the Speaker’s chair,” he said.

Sivakumar added that since PR deemed the May 7 sitting illegal, he had to proceed on with their duties as the legal Speaker.  “This also means that this committee is the legal Rights and Privileges Committee and we are merely carrying out our duties,” he said.On why he did not want to choose to wait for the decision of his pending High Court case against Ganesan, due for hearing on August 6, Sivakumar said:  “Like Ganesan, I am just carrying out my rightful duties.  “Until a court decision is reached, I am the Perak Speaker,” he said.

Sivakumar also said that the committee would only reach a decision on Thursday, after it holds a second meeting, arranged to be held again, at the State Secretariat building. This announcement caused mirth among the pressmen for it was clear that yet another standoff outside the state’s administrative building could be expected on Thursday.

Sivakumar also said that Ganesan would be summoned for a second time to attend Thursday’s hearing.  “If he does not attend, we will decide on what to do. However, whether or not he comes, the committee will still make its decision,” he said.  On how the committee planned to enforce its decision however, Sivakumar smiled and said that PR would decide on what to do when the time arrived.

Shortly after the conference, PKR’s Chan Ming Kai, who is also a member of the committee, left for the State Secretariat building to serve summons notices on Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and former PR comrade Hee Yit Foong, who is also the assembly’s deputy speaker.

The notices called for the two to be present at another investigation by the committee, this time to be held at 10am this Friday, also at the State Secretariat building.  Chan said that this investigation was on another complaint made by Yee, also on the May 7 sitting, but this time on the conduct of Zambry and Hee.

“Zambry was the one who introduced the motion to remove Sivakumar from the Speaker’s chair although the meeting was yet to be convened.  “Hee, on the other hand, was the one who took over the proceedings of the House from Sivakumar although he was still the legal Speaker,” he said.

The summons notice to Zambry was successfully served while the one to Hee will only be served tomorrow. – Malaysiainsider

EPF to loan RM 5bln to PROKHAS – BN’s misuse of public fund?

EPF to loan RM 5bln to PROKHAS – BN’s misuse of public fund?

kwspKUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — A government agency which is administrating two schemes under the first economic stimulus package is in talks with the employees’ pension fund for a RM5 billion, a business daily said.

The Malaysian Reserve, citing an unidentifed source today, said the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) was ready to fund the loan at an undisclosed rate to Prokhas, the government-owned special purpose vehicle.

The source added that Prokhas was also looking at other financing options including government bonds, private debt securities or a term loan that may give more competitive rates.

Malaysia announced its first stimulus package of RM60 billion in March to shore up the export-reliant economy against the global economic crisis.

Prokhas manages two schemes under the package and was allocated 5 billion ringgit each, known as Working Capital Guarantee Scheme and the Industry Restructuring Loan Scheme, which is under the Ministry of Finance.

EPF’s talks with Prokhas may draw some criticism, as loans to government agencies and corporations have in the past been called bailouts for poorly performing local companies by critics and the resurgent opposition.

In 2008, the government said it would transfer RM5 billion from the EPF to state owned fundmanager Valuecap to be invested in undervalued Malaysian stocks. — Reuters

Teoh Beng Hock’s death: Teoh was still under custody when he died – RPK

Teoh Beng Hock’s death: Teoh was still under custody when he died – RPK

tbh2The MACC says that Teoh Beng Hock was released at 3.45am after a gruelling marathon interrogation session that lasted the whole night. But Teoh was not under arrest or even a suspect in a crime, says the MACC. He was merely a witness, and a very cooperative witness on top of that, claims the MACC.

If Teoh was merely a witness, as what they say, why was there a need to interrogate him throughout the night? Could not his interrogation have been done during normal working hours?

Even when under Internal Security Act (ISA) detention, the Special Branch is supposed to interrogate detainees during ‘office hours’. They are not allowed to interrogate detainees at night or outside ‘office hours’. And, in particular, detainees should not be subjected to marathon interrogation sessions or subjected to sleep depravation, a form of torture.

And these are ISA detainees, mind you, said to be ‘threats to national security’ and/or suspected ‘terrorists’. Yet there are certain rules to be observed. What more if one is merely a witness to a suspected crime, not even established yet whether a crime had or had not been committed?

But in Teoh’s case he was subjected to a marathon interrogation session and outside ‘office hours’ on top of that. He was subjected to sleep depravation. And he was not a detainee, he was not under arrest, and he was not a suspect in a crime, claims the MACC. He was merely a witness to a suspected crime, and a very cooperative witness too.

After Teoh’s statement was recorded he was released and allowed to go home at 3.45am, they say. He was supposed to return at 8.00am for the interrogation to continue. And he was supposed to go home and come back at 8.00am with some documents that the MACC required.

But Teoh decided instead to sleep on the sofa at the MACC office. At 6.00am he was alleged to have ‘disappeared’. He never returned at 8.00am for his interrogation to be continued. And the MACC never bothered to go look for their witness who had ‘absconded’. The pathologist says he died between 8.30-9.30am. But they never found his body until lunchtime.

Was Teoh released at 3.45am and allowed to go home, as what the MACC claims? Or was he still under custody right up to the time of his death around 8.30-9.30am?

Teoh was never released at 3.45am. He was still under custody right up to the time of his death at around 8.30-9.30am.

One very important point that many may have overlooked is that Teoh’s hand phone was not found on his body. His hand phone was still with the MACC. And the police confirmed this. And that hand phone is now with the police.

If Teoh had been released, his hand phone would have been in his pocket or beside his body (or on the sofa where he had slept). It would not have been in the ‘safekeeping’ of the MACC.

If the MACC had released Teoh at 3.45am but wanted to retain his hand phone then they would have had to issue a piece of paper listing down all Teoh’s property that was going to be retained for further investigation.

Assuming the MACC was going to retain Teoh’s hand phone then this paper would not only list down all the property to be retained but full details such as make, model, serial number, and so on.

In short, Teoh would walk out of the MACC office at 3.45am without his hand phone but with a piece of paper confirming whatever property the MACC was retaining for further investigation with full details of that property. And both Teoh and the MACC officer would have to sign this paper.

This provision comes under Section 33 of the MACCA.

And this is what the Act says:

Section 33(1): …any movable property which is the subject matter of an offence or evidence relating to the offence shall be liable to seizure.

Section 33(2): A list of all movable property seized pursuant to subsection (1) and of the places in which they are respectively found shall be prepared by the officer of the Commission affecting the seizure and signed by him.

Section 33(3): A copy of the list referred to in subsection (2) shall be served on the owner of such property or on the person from whom the property was seized as soon as possible.

In Teoh’s case, the list of moveable property seized under Section 33(1) of the MACCA was not issued nor served on him, which is a requirement under Section 33(2) and Section 33(3) of the MACCA. This confirms that Teoh was still under custody and was not released at 3.45am as claimed. If not, Teoh would have this paper on his body confirming that his hand phone had been retained by the MACC.

In short, Teoh died between 8.30am and 9.30am while still under the custody of the MACC. The statement that he was released at 3.45am is utter bullshit. Teoh would not walk out of the MACC office at 3.45am without his hand phone or at least a receipt that the MACC had confiscated his hand phone. This is a requirement under the MACCA. If not how would Teoh later prove that his hand phone was still with the MACC? He would need evidence of that.

Furthermore, what if they find incriminating evidence in his hand phone and Teoh later denies that it is his hand phone? The MACC would need to prove that they had confiscated Teoh’s hand phone to be able to use this evidence in court. And that would make the paper very crucial for both Teoh and the MACC. And both Teoh and the MACC would need to sign this paper for it to be valid.

The government wants to set up a Commission and Board of Inquiry to investigate Teoh’s death. The crucial question is: did Teoh die while still under custody or had he already been released by then? Our investigation shows Teoh was still under custody. And the absence of that piece of paper required under Section 33 of the MACCA proves it. Teoh’s hand phone was with the MACC when he died. If he had been released they would either return his hand phone or give him a receipt confirming they are retaining his hand phone. None were found on his body.

Kerjasama PAS-UMNO – Nik Aziz nafi laporan media!

Kerjasama PAS-UMNO – Nik Aziz nafi laporan media!

Benarkah Michael Jackson seorang Islam?

Benarkah Michael Jackson seorang Islam?

Betulkah Michael Jackson telah memeluk agama Islam?  Umat Islam seluruh dunia kini tertanya-tanya apakah Michael Jackson seorang Islam.

Sekiranya Michael Jackson adalah seorang Islam, semoga Allah merahmati roh beliau, Wallahu a’lam.

Ku Li – Federal government must pay Kelantan oil royalties!

Ku Li – Federal government must pay Kelantan oil royalties!

kuli8-july22KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 – Former Petronas chairman Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has rubbished reasons given by the federal government over its dismissal of the Kelantan state government’s claim on oil royalties and says that the national oil company is obligated by law to pay up.

The Kelantan state government has claimed that is is owed RM1 billion in royalties from oil that has been extracted in an offshore area bordering Thailand.

In response, Information Communication and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Rais Yatim had said that the Kelantan demand for oil royalty had no legal basis and was made to earn political mileage.

According to Tengku Razaleigh however, the vesting deed agreement, which he signed on behalf of Petronas as founding chairman and CEO, entitles the state to five per cent of any revenue derived from hydrocarbon deposits found on or offshore of the state.

“If I am chairman still of Petronas, I will pay without all the fuss,” he told The Malaysian Insider in an interview earlier this week. “And I feel all the more it should be paid because I signed the agreement! There is no two ways about it. It must be paid.”

The former finance minister declined to comment on whether political considerations played a part in the decision not to pay Kelantan oil royalties but noted that Terengganu oil royalty payments were suspended when it was under the opposition but was reinstated when it returned to Barisan Nasional rule last year.

“I don’t know what kind of politics they are playing,” he said.

Kematian Teoh Beng Hock – Ronnie Liu dedah butiran perbelanjaan Sg. Pelek.

Kematian Teoh Beng Hock – Ronnie Liu dedah butiran perbelanjaan Sg. Pelek.

ronniePETALING JAYA: Exco Kerajaan Negeri Selangor, Ronnie Liu petang tadi mendedahkan butiran perbelanjaan awam bagi kawasan Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Sungai Pelek, sekali gus menafikan wujudnya elemen penyalahgunaan dana kerajaan.

Pilihan raya umum diadakan Mac 2008.
